Inspirational Wednesday: Chance? Fate? Providence August 1, 2012

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

This (pic above) is my “God is in Control” shirt. It seems like bad things always happen when I wear this shirt. Funny, about ten minutes after donning this shirt and thinking that very statement there was an accident. Chris was mowing the lawn and a tiny rock spun up and shattered our glass storm door.  Not long after the mower died. And then the AC stopped working for a couple of hours. (rest of the story near the end)

So I ask you: fate? chance? or providence?
(you don’t really have to answer….just ponder it)

Fate– the will or principle or determining cause by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do. Comes from the myth of the three goddesses who determine the course of human life in classical mythology

Chance– The unknown and unpredictable element in happenings that seems to have no assignable cause.

Providence– The protective care of God

I had planned this post way before but the events of last Saturday fit perfectly. For the past two weeks we’ve been discussing the life of Joseph in Sunday School and we’ve been learning about Romans 8:28 in Church. If you’re a true follower of Jesus then you should have the Biblical world view: God is in control. God has a plan for those who love Him. All things work together for our good…..even the bad stuff. Nothing is chance. There’s no such thing as luck. It’s all providence.

The most memorable bad experience while wearing the “God is in control” shirt was at a conference in Chicago with L.A. Marzulli. Michael got a candy caught in his throat & he began to choke. L.A. actually helped calm Michael down (and me as well lol) and made sure he was okay. The paramedics were called to make sure Michael didn’t hurt his throat. It was scary and I was a nervous wreck. That’s when a lady pointed out the shirt I was wearing “Relax, God is in Control”. Michael was okay but that was the beginning of a horrible day that ended with me puking in the hotel bathroom.

Do I know how that worked together for my good? No not really. But I praise God that He was with me through it all and that Michael didn’t choke to death.  Something we’ve talked about a lot in church is that the promise is that God will work things out, not necessarily take us out of bad situations. Most of the time God takes us through a hard time and works it to our good. Take Joseph for example.

Read Genesis 37-45 in the Bible. Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob and a dreamer. You may remember the coat of many colors Jacob gave Joseph. His (at the time) ten brothers were jealous. They wanted to kill him but by God’s providence they instead sold Joseph as a slave. Joseph became the head slave of Potiphar, an Egyptian official. God prospered Joseph and it was evident to everyone that Joseph had God’s favor. Potiphar’s wife tried to get Joseph to sleep with her but he refused and ran…leaving his coat in her hands. Potiphar’s wife falsely accused Joseph of trying to rape her. So Potiphar threw Joseph in the dungeon. Another blessing by God’s providence….Joseph was thrown into the dungeon instead of being killed for touching an official’s wife.

By God’s plan, Joseph was put in charge of all the other prisoners and he prospered. Two of the prisoners had dreams which Joseph interpreted by God’s wisdom. Pharaoh began having nightmares and was told of Joseph. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and was put second in command over all Egypt. The only person greater was Pharaoh himself. Joseph prospered. Egypt prospered while the rest of the known world had drought and famine. Joseph’s brothers went to Egypt to beg for food. It is the first time they had seen Joseph since they sold him and they had no clue he was their brother. To make a long story short, Joseph forgives his brothers and saves his whole family (and the people of God, Israel) from starvation.

Shewwww….that was a lot to write lol. If you didn’t know up front that God had a plan for Joseph then his life events wouldn’t make sense at all. It’s obvious that nothing was chance for sure. But if you didn’t know the ending of the story it would seem pretty crazy and unfair. Joseph is innocent but he gets sold as a slave by his own brothers, he is falsely accused of rape, and put in prison. God definitely didn’t turn Joseph’s life into roses. Bad things happened to Joseph.

Ah, but we do know the end of the story. God allowed those bad things to happen so Joseph could save the people of Israel. We talked about in Sunday School how God may have used those events to humble Joseph and prepare him to be a leader. If you are a true lover of God (You’ve made him Lord of your life) then every thing in your life is working together for the good and you have purpose. God always has His hand on you. Relax…God is in control. You don’t know the end of your story yet but you can trust the author of it. He loves you so much He died for you. He wants you to prosper but it may not be the way you think. He doesn’t promise millions of dollars and fancy cars…but he does promise joy and peace during trials…..love, comfort, His abiding presence.  The world may fall around you but don’t worry. God has you and you’re going to be okay.

To finish my own tale:  When the bad things started happening I got a memory jog. At first, I thought maybe I had provoked the darkness with my shirt. Maybe this was a spiritual attack. But later I thought that was giving the enemy too much credit. God is in control after all. I often need a reminder of that. So it occurred to me that maybe since God knows all things He ordained for me to wear the “God is in control” shirt on bad days because He knew I would need a reminder on those days. As I pondered this I felt peace. Every bad thing was met with prayer.

Praise Jesus! We were able to basically get a free new door that same day! Our AC started working again after Chris flipped the breaker…though he said he doesn’t know why that would’ve fixed it. “It’s God!” I told him. Had God not worked things to the good we would be in a mess. We did not have the money to fix either. Also there was answered prayer to the rain being held back. Usually when the unexpected happens I’m a worry wart on the verge of a panic attack. By God’s grace I was actually calm this time. I pray I’ll always be calm because every fiasco we’ve had, God has worked to our good. We’ve had some doozies and truly the only explanation for survival is the hand of God.

PS: Here is a beautiful song that a girl sung at our church Sunday. I just fell in love with it. I already love this band. The video is acoustic & live and the lead singer also explains what the song is about. You can get this song on Itunes.

“Garden” by Need to Breathe

Lyrics “Garden”

Vs. 1

Won’t you take this cup from me

Cause fear has stolen all my sleep

If tomorrow means my death

Pray you’ll save their souls with it

Chorus:
Let the songs I sing bring joy to you

Let the words I say confess my love

Let the notes I choose be your favorite tune

Father let my heart be after you

Vs. 2

In this hour of doubt

I see Who I am is not just me

So give me strength to die myself

So love can live to tell the tale

Chorus:

Let the songs I sing bring joy to you

Let the words I say confess my love

Let the notes I choose be your favorite tune

Father let my heart be after you
Father let my heart be For you For you For you For you
Let the songs I sing bring joy to you

Let the words I say confess my love

Let the notes I choose be your favorite tune

Father let my heart be after you
Father let my heart be after you
