The High King Lives

Crafty Monday: Peg doll creations & Creation tees for Earth Day April 23, 2012

Hello, friends 🙂 (I”m realizing I use too many smileys lol). Welcome to crafty Monday. Little man and I have been so focused on his math these past two weeks that we haven’t been too crafty. Easter and piratey birthday stuff are over so our theme has been weather. April showers bring May flowers as you know ;). Yeah, next month will be all about bugs and flowers. I hope to get some crafting done this week. Here’s some of my ideas: Rain Stick and Wind Sock from
http://www.redtedart.com/2011/06/01/weather-get-crafty-weather-themed-crafts-and-tutorials/

Also, I put together this lapbook: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/weather_words_lapbook.php

So today’s post will be about past crafts and a fun hobby of mine…..making peg doll sets.

I am not quite a professional but I hope to perfect my art and maybe sell a few peg doll sets. Anywho, I’ll show you my dolls so make sure you can see the pictures :).

In the beginning I didn’t think much about sealing my work. So Michael’s peg dolls got scratched up fast. Recently I modge podged them all and they almost look brand new….except the Native Americans have lost their feathers.

My first peg doll set had a medieval theme. There’s a King, Queen, and Princess. Then there’s Robin Hood and Gisborne from BBC’s Robin Hood (I love that show).

I made a box for them later. The wooden castle and unicorn came from Michael’s craft store. I just hot glued it on. The baby Thumbelina was me playing around with salt dough.

Here’s the top:

My second peg doll set and the first one with a box was all about Fall. There’s Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin,Scarecrow, and Chester (our black cat).  I will definitely be perfecting my fall tree because it’s rather pitiful.

Here’s the front of the Fall box:

For Thanksgiving we studied Native Americans and I made a couple of peg dolls to go with Michael’s teepee and his felt vegetable garden. Maybe I will make a box for them and some Pilgrims this year…..I could also incorporate a Thanksgiving table.

During Christmas time I made several peg doll angels for ornaments

Then I eventually made a Nativity box. I made the baby Jesus, Joseph’s staff, and the Magi’s gifts out of salt dough.

Here’s the front of the box. It’s a Nativity Silhouette.

Then came Pirates 🙂 I really had fun making Pirate Annie (the red head). I got the wooden ship from Michael’s.

I didn’t make peg dolls for Valentine’s but I did make some nesting dolls out of salt dough. They look cute but I couldn’t get them to fit inside each other. I’m still learning…

For Michael’s St Patrick’s Day box I just threw together a few “Irish” peg dolls. I got the idea from Pink and Green Mama’s blog (link on my blogroll). They looked so much better when I sealed them with modge podge later.

Then for Olivia’s (Michael’s girlfriend) Mermaid party I made her a Mermaid box

This was the first doll set I’ve given away. I’m pretty proud of it. You can’t see but there’s a real baby starfish glued to the mermaid’s hair. I got the wooden Mermaid from Michael’s.

I’m thinking in the future I can do themed princess sets…fairies…gnomes etc. I’m still learning. Some of my dolls have faces and some don’t. I guess it depends on my mood. I’m glad I have several sets I can perfect and possibly sell. Others have mentioned Bible characters etc…I’m sure I’ll add to the collection. Michael won’t play with these forever….so I’ve got to find children who will.

We didn’t do anything for Earth Day Sunday but we did make t-shirts last year. So here are the pictures.

Virtual Friday: Pirate Adventures April 5, 2012

Ahoy Mateys and welcome to another Virtual Friday! 🙂 My son is having a Pirate Themed party tomorrow so today we will be visiting a couple of Piratey sims. So get ready to walk the plank! Arrrrr!

#1 The John King Pirate Experience: Visit Escapades (30, 140, 23)

The John King Pirate Experience is inside the Escapades Sim. Climb into the painting to be taken into a magical world where the story is told of the youngest pirate there ever was.

Wiki: John King (c. 1706/9 – April 26, 1717) was an 18th century pirate. He joined the crew of Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy while still a juvenile, and is the youngest known pirate on record. (read the rest here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_King_(pirate)  )

Escapades Island has several other adventures you can enjoy 🙂

#2 Dream Reliance (Retropolis Sim): Visit Dream Reliance (141, 136, 243)

This sim is great for taking Pirate pictures. Beware the Sea monster!

#3 The Fire Escape (Christian Club): Visit Icanhaz (138, 68, 133)

Ok, so this club isn’t Piratey but they do have theme nights and I tied for third place with my Pirate costume.

The theme was past and future (hence the dinosaurs etc)

Media Saturday: Piratey books, movies, & music for Pirate themed party March 31, 2012

Welcome my friends to Media Saturday. Next Saturday is my son’s pirate birthday party. I may get a chance to review The Hunger Games movie but I may not. So I’m going to go ahead and post these piratey ideas 😉

Wow, this has been a busy week and the next may be just as busy. Not only are we gearing up for Passover & Easter but also Michael’s 6th birthday pirate style. I am a homeschooling mommy and I always try to tie in holidays and such with our school…..Easter crafts and such….Pirate books. Also, I had to have piratey music for the party. Here’s what I found.

#1 Pirate books

“Pirate Bob” by Kathryn Lasky

(Pic removed in case of copyright issues)

Bob is an interesting pirate. He loves the adventure of sailing the seas but he longs for a true friend. This book shows the life of a pirate well, the ups and the downs 🙂

“How I became a Pirate” by Melinda Long

(Pic removed in case of copyright issues)

Jeremy thinks he knows everything about being a pirate. When a crew takes him aboard, Jeremy is ready to live with the pirates forever. He doesn’t have to use table manners or eat spinach. It’s great…until he realizes pirates don’t tell bed time stories or tuck you in. They can’t even play soccer. And when a big storm comes no one holds Jeremy and tells him he’ll be ok. In the end Jeremy would rather be a normal boy.

#2 Piratey movies

I’m not going to go in depth but these are great family movies with Pirates 🙂

Veggie Tales: The Pirate’s Who Don’t Do Anything (has a great lesson to teach & several funny moments)

(Pic removed in case of copyright issues)

Muppet Treasure Island (the muppets spin on the classic)

(Pic removed in case of copyright issues)

Peter Pan (I love this version.)

#3 Piratey music

This is the playlist for the party:

1. He’s a Pirate (from Pirate’s of the Caribbean soundtrack)

2. We live on the Seas (from The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking soundtrack)

3.  Under the Sea (from The Little Mermaid)

4. The Ballad of  Jonah (Gilligan’s Island Theme) ~from Veggie Tales

5.  The Life of a Pirate by Joe Thompson

6.  Yo Ho Hero (Veggie Tales)

7. The Pirate Song (Ray Stevens)

8. Yo, Ho! A Pirate’s Life For Me! (Disney’s greatest volume 3)

9.  Part of Your World  (The Little Mermaid)

10. The Pirate’s who don’t do anything (Veggie Tales)

11. A Pirate’s Life (The Jud Conlon Chorus)

12. There’s a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea (Veggie Tales)

Well, I hope you have an inspiring weekend 🙂 God bless and remember The High King Lives!~Amber Dover
